So I pulled the engine and changed both left and right chains and guides as well as both hydraulic timing chain tensioners. 75000 mile intervals is kinda a explorerforum standard because of all the timing related problems. Don't fill the tensioner up with oil. install it dry with 1 thin ford washer keep the washer centred torque to 35 foot pounds. Disconnect coil pack spin the engine with the starter for 5 or so seconds.

I had rough running and a P0401 code indicating an EGR valve problem. There is NO separate DPFE on an '05 despite the recommendations in many forums that you replace the DPFE first. There's an EGR systems module (ESM) that incorporates a DPFE. I got the Motorcraft EGR valve (part # CX-2102) from Amazon for $101.
